BALTIMORE – The 2009-10 season awards are starting to roll in for sophomore forward and team captain John Williams (Mervo/Baltimore, MD) selected to the 2010 All Maryland JUCO Team.  Williams is a two year starter and team captain for the Panthers of Baltimore City Community and now a new edition to his resume, 2010 MD JUCO Conference Champions.

Prior to the first game of the season, Williams was awarded as a 3rd team All-American player for the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association).  This award was given to only two Maryland state players and BCCC was fortunate to have those two players playing for the Panthers.  Sophomore guard Charda Lomax (Frederick Douglass/Baltimore, MD) was awarded as 2nd Team All-American.

Williams clearly finished what he started last year which he recorded an outstanding 15 double-doubles throughout the season and averaged 13 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.  His best scoring game came against Beaver County during the regular season finishing with a game high 25 points.

Throughout the MD JUCO Tournament, Williams finished the same way as he did during the season ending the first round game against the College of Southern MD with 14 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and three blocks, the quarterfinal game against number one seed Cecil College 11 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and three blocks, the semifinal game against Frederick eight points, 10 rebounds, two assists and three blocks.  In the championship game against MC-Germantown, the team along with Williams put on a defensive showcase which he recorded a season high five blocks along with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“I did not think I was good enough to play college ball but hard work and playing with these guys made my job even easier,” John Williams stated.  “Last year was easy but this season since I was awarded as NJCAA’s All-American all of the teams were looking for me and setting up their defensive schemes to contain me.”  “Overall I am very thankful for this award but the state championship feels a whole lot better because we won that as a team.”
