BALTIMORE – History in the making was the initial thought of BCCC's women's basketball team this season; however, that was an understatement. The Lady Panthers of BCCC are capping off a remarkable and undefeated season led by starting point guard and team captain Tanira McClurkin (St. Frances/Baltimore, MD). Selecting Tanira to the All Maryland JUCO Team was a no brainer.
McClurkin is a true freshman and a former standout player for St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland. Just like sophomore forward and All-American John Williams (Mervo/Baltimore, MD) in adding a new edition to his resume, so can Tanira. McClurkin was a key part in the team defeating Allegany College 56-48 in the MD JUCO Conference Championship.
Throughout the MD JUCO Tournament, McClurkin started the same way as she did during the season ending the quarterfinal round game against Frederick Community College with 12 points, four rebounds, eight assists and six steals, the semifinal round game against Garrett College with a team high 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and eight steals. In the championship game against Allegany College, the team along with McClurkin was ready to redeem themselves from last year's championship game loss. The Lady Panthers lost a heartfelt game with the final score reading in favor of Allegany 51-50. However, this year was different with McClurkin leading the way in scoring with 14 points, two assists and three steals.
For the first time in Panther history, the Lady Panthers are currently holding onto an undefeated overall record at 20-0, with McClurkin leading the team in a number of categories within the MD JUCO Conference as well as Region XX. This season Tanira is averaging 13 points, three rebounds, six assists and five steals per game which has her at number one in the conference in assists and steals.
Not only leading the team on the court, McClurkin shows strong leadership in the classroom carrying a 3.6 GPA and was awarded as a Distinguished Scholar during the fall term.
