Lady Panthers take on Frederick CC in the second round of the MD JUCO Tournament

BALTIMORE – The BCCC Lady Panthers (17-0; 10-0 MD JUCO Conference) are focused and ready to travel to Prince George's Community College to take on the Lady Cougars of Frederick Community College (9-13; 3-9 MD JUCO Conference) in the second round/quarterfinals of the MD JUCO Conference Tournament on Thursday, February 18th.  Game time is set for 3 p.m.

This will be the second time this season the two teams meet.  The first meeting found the Lady Panthers on the winning end in convincing fashion with Frederick losing the game by 48 points, 82-34.  A balance attack of defense and offense lead to five players scoring in double figures.

The Lady Panthers were nationally ranked in a number of categories all season but the most important to head coach Renard Smith is holding the number one spot in team defense for 10 weeks strong.  BCCC only allowed their opponents to score an average 42 points per game.

Sophomore guard and NJCAA All-American Charda Lomax (Frederick Douglass/Baltimore, MD) finished the game with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists followed by sophomore forward Ashley Jones (Old Mill/Baltimore, MD) ending the game with a double-double 13 points and 20 rebounds.

Strong performances from the usual suspects were freshmen Tanira McClurkin (St. Frances/Baltimore, MD) recording 10 points and six steals and Ciarra Lucas (Old Mill/Baltimore, MD) adding 10 points, two assists and two rebounds.

Freshman forward Denisha Haywood (Forest Park/Baltimore, MD) led the charge in defense with a double-double of her own ending the game with seven points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks.

Both women and men will have semi-finals on Saturday, with the women at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and then men at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.  The men's championship will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday with the women's final to be held at 3 p.m.

Tickets for the tournament are $10 each day or $25 for a tournament pass.  Tournament programs, t-shirts and concessions will be on sale during the event.
