BALTIMORE, Md. – The Baltimore City Community College men's basketball team pulled off a 94-86 overtime win against Chesapeake College on Wednesday night at the BCCC P.E. Center. The Panthers have now won seven straight games (7-1 overall) and are 3-0 in the Maryland JUCO Conference.
Kenny Bey-Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Ben Franklin HS) connected on two free throws with 3:39 left in overtime to force an 82-all tie and then hit a layup 28 seconds later to give BCCC a lead it would hold for the remainder of the contest. A free throw by Micah Fraction (Silver Spring, Md./Montrose Christian) with 43 seconds left in the game sealed the win for the Panthers.
DaSheek Bannister made good on one of two free throws with 20 seconds left in regulation to give Chesapeake (3-6, 2-1) a two-point lead, 82-80. But BCCC guard Kendal Williams (Dover, Del./Dover HS) sank two free throws of his own with seven seconds left to force the extra period.
The Panthers maintained a double-digit lead for much of the first half and went into halftime up 41-29. Chesapeake rallied back in the second half and got within two, 78-76, after a 3-pointer by Ryan Waters with one minute left in regulation. Another trey ball by Bannister just 19 seconds later gave the Skipjacks a 79-78 lead.
Both teams were relatively even across the board in all the statistical categories. BCCC shot 43 percent (34-of-79) from the field, grabbed 53 rebounds and had 17 assists. Chesapeake was 33-of-80 (41.3 percent) from the floor, had 50 rebounds and passed out 18 assists. The major difference came at the free-throw line. The Panthers were 20-of-32 from the stripe while the Skipjacks went 13-of-31. BCCC also had 17 steals compared to Chesapeake's eight.
Waters led Chesapeake with 25 points and 12 rebounds, while Bannister added 24 points. Jimmie Jenkins also scored in double figures with 11 points.
Fraction paced the Panthers in scoring for the fourth straight game with 25 points. Bey-Brown added 22 points, while Brandon Belt (Odenton, Md./Arundel HS) and Williams had 13 and 10 points, respectively. Alex Weaver (Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll HS) grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Panthers look to keep their streak alive on Saturday when they host Cecil College at 1 p.m.
