BALTIMORE, Md. – The Baltimore City Community College women's volleyball team dropped a close match to Frederick Community College at the BCCC P.E. Center on Wednesday night. The Lady Panthers (1-12) lost 3-2 (24-26, 25-21, 13-25, 25-23, 11-15).
Down 24-21 in the first set, BCCC rallied to tie things up at 24-all. But back-to-back kills by Amanda Kearney claimed the win for Frederick (3-2). The Lady Panthers came back and tied the match at 1-1 after winning the second set 25-21.
But the Lady Cougars dominated the third set and posted a convincing 25-13 win. In set 4, Rodchell Thompson (Woodlawn HS) delivered two straight service aces to break a 19-all tie and put the Lady Panthers up 21-19. Frederick rallied to get within one (24-23) after a service error by Kourtney Anderson (Baltimore City College HS), but BCCC won the set after an attack error by Frederick's Olivia Hannah.
In the fifth and final set, Frederick jumped out to an early 9-2 lead. But BCCC would not give up. A kill by Rachael Griffith (Western HS) tied the set at 11-all and then the Lady Panthers went up by one after a Frederick attack error. But the Lady Cougars scored four straight points to take the match.
Danielle Standley (Millford Mill Academy) and Myrtice Jackson (Mergenthaler HS) led BCCC with nine kills each. Griffith had a team-high 27 assists, while Thompson tallied a team-best 18 digs. Anderson added 13 digs and seven kills and Jackson just missed a double-double with 11 digs and nine kills. Sheena Belton (Edmonson-Westside HS) had eight kills and three digs.
The Lady Panthers head to Hagerstown, Md. to participate in the New Horizons/Tracy Leather Memorial Volleyball hosted by Hagerstown Community College on Saturday and Sunday. BCCC plays Hagerstown at 11 a.m. and Allegany College immediately after. On Sunday, they will play two matches based on Saturday's seedings.
