BALTIMORE, Md. – The Baltimore City Community College men's basketball team narrowly escaped with a 92-85 win over Montgomery College-Germantown on Wednesday night at the BCCC P.E. Center.
The Panthers led by as many as 15 points late in the second half only to see the Gryphons tie the game at 80-all after a free throw by David Johnson with 2:37 left in the game.
BCCC (6-3, 3-2 MD JUCO) pushed the lead to six, 89-83, after a pair of free throws by Xavier Drake (Baltimore, Md./Millford Mill) with 38 seconds left. But Marcus Carmon hit two free throws of his own to cut Germantown's deficit to four.
A foul by Nicholas Brown sent Zafir Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Vaux HS) to the charity stripe where he increased the Panthers' lead back to six, 91-85 and Germantown (3-6, 0-5 MD JUCO) was not able to connect on either of their shot attempts. A free throw by Christian Diboko (Kinshasa, Congo/St. Moulin HS) sealed the win for the Panthers.
BCCC also squandered a large lead in the first half to keep the Gryphons in the game. The Panthers led by 18 points (42-24) after a layup by Daron Jenkins (Baltimore, Md./Lake Clifton HS) with 5:21 left in the opening period. But Germantown went on a 17-4 run to get within five, 46-41, at halftime.
Bradley Hunt had 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Carmon had 22 points and 12 rebounds for Germantown.
For BCCC, Williams had 19 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks. Carlos Smith (Baltimore, Md./Forest Park HS) had 18 points and 11 boards and added two assists and two blocks. Drake also had 18 points and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line.
Theo West (Philadelphia, Pa./Kensington HS) and Donte Stuckey (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook HS) also scored in double figures for the Panthers with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
The Panthers are off until next Wednesday when they host CCBC-Essex at 7 p.m.
