BALTIMORE, Md. – Freshman Myrtice Jackson (Mergenthaler HS) had a match-high 10 kills and teammate Rachael Griffith (Western HS) recorded a match-high 20 assists as the Baltimore City Community College volleyball earned its first win of the season in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-13) defeat of Cecil College. The win was also the first of second-year head coach Amy Manougian's career.
BCCC (1-10) dominated the entire match and cruised to a 25-18 win in the first set.
In the second set, the Lady Panthers started on a 4-0 run and led 15-9 until a kill by Cecil's Melissa Ewig. A kill by Lauren Bare put the Seahawks (1-5) up 18-17, but BCCC tied the set and regained the lead after three straight kills by freshman Danielle Standley (Milford Mill Academy). Cecil managed just two more points the rest of the way.
The Lady Panthers were ready to seal the deal in set 3 as they started on an 8-0 run. They led by as many as 11 points (20-9) at one point. A service error by Ewig ended the set at 25-13 and gave the Lady Panthers their long-awaited first victory.
For Cecil, Bare led the way with six kills and six digs. Ewig had eight assists, five digs and three kills.
Sophomore Sheena Belton (Edmondson-Westside HS) hit .333 with six kills, three service aces and one block assist. Kourtney Anderson (City College HS) and Jasmine Bourne (Lake Clifton HS) also had three aces apiece.
The Lady Panthers make the long trip to Cumberland, Md. on Saturday to take on Allegany College at 2 p.m.
