WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Baltimore City Community College men's basketball team erased a five-point deficit in overtime to pull off an 87-86 win over Cape Fear Community College on Friday night in the Cape Fear CC Classic.
BCCC (3-0) was down by eight, 48-40, early in the second half, but took a 55-54 lead after a layup by
Sean Farr (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar HS) with 11:49 left in the game. Cape Fear (4-1) tied things up after one of two free throws by Phillip Wallace about a minute later. The teams traded baskets and
Kendall Williams (Dover, Del./Dover HS) broke a 68-all tie with a layup at the 3:30 mark to five the Panthers a 70-68 lead.
Williams would break another tie (74-all) with a pair of free throws with just eight seconds left in regulation. Cape Fear's Anthony Williams would bank a layup in the lane as time expired to send the game into overtime.
The Sea Devils posted a quick four-point lead, 80-76, but the Panthers rallied back behind the shooting of
Dwayne Brewer (Baltimore, Md./Douglass HS). Brewer provided an offensive spark for the Panthers by scoring their first five points in overtime. Williams connected on another pair of free throws to give BCCC an 87-83 lead with 24 seconds left. Terrance Hampton drained a 3-pointer for Cape Fear with 13 seconds left, but it was not enough to put away the Panthers.
The game was close for most of the first half and Cape Fear took a 42-35 lead into halftime.
For the Sea Devils, Faronte Drakeford had a game-high 23 points and added seven rebounds, three steals and a block. Tony Menton had 16 points and four rebounds, while Anthony Williams finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. JT Murphy chipped in 11 points and three rebounds.
Will Adams (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep HS) scored a team-high 19 points off the bench for BCCC and grabbed seven boards. Farr,
Kendal Williams and
Quentin Judd (Baltimore, Md./Pensacola State College) recorded 13 points apiece. Williams was 6-of-8 from the charity stripe and 3-of-9 from the field.
Justin Kuntz (Baltimore, Md./Polk College) posted a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Brewer finished the game with eight points and three steals.
BCCC takes on Brunswick Community College at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the conclusion of the Cape Fear Classic.
