DANVILLE, Ill. – Desmond Williams scored 23 points to lead the Community College of Rhode Island to an 85-64 win over Baltimore City Community College on Wednesday in the second round of 2012 NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament on the campus of Danville Area Community College.
BCCC (24-11) takes on Johnson County CC (16-19) at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday. If the Panthers win, they will advance to the 5th/6th place game at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday. If they lose, they will be eliminated from the tournament.
The Panthers scored the first seven points in the first minute and a half of the game. But CCRI then scored seven unanswered points to tie the game at 7-all. The game remained close for much of the first half and a pair of free throws by Keith Lackerson with 13 seconds left in the first half put CCRI up by three, 36-33, right before halftime.
The Panthers found themselves down by 10 points (56-46) midway through the second half after a bucket by Lackerson with 10:29 left in the game. CCRI led by as many as 25, 84-59, after a jumper by Williams at the 3:40 mark.
A basket by Tyler Washington (Brooklyn, N.Y./Erasmus HS) with 33 seconds left ended the scoring for the game.
For CCRI, Rogerio Livramento had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Bryan Yarce had 13 points and four assists and Lackerson and Isaac Medeiros had 12 points apiece.
Sean Farr (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar HS) led the Panthers with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Zafir Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Vaux HS) and Carlos Smith (Baltimore, Md./Forest Park HS) each had 10 points.
