No. 2 BCCC Upsets No. 1 Cecil 83-80 to Win Region XX Tournament Title

HAGERSTOWN, Md.Theodore West (Philadelphia, Pa./Kensington HS) connected on a pair of free throws with one second left in overtime to help No. 2 Baltimore City Community College upset No. 1 Cecil College 83-80 in the championship game of the 2012 Region XX Tournament. This is BCCC's first regional championship under head coach Terry Maczko and the first since 1998.

The Panthers (23-10) will play in the 2012 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Tournament that will be held at Danville Area Community College in Danville, Illinois from March 20-24. Seedings will be released on March 13.

“We've had injuries and illnesses, played a tough non-conference schedule, and faced some adversity during the season,” Maczko said. “But we were ready to face the challenge of this tournament. The guys earned this championship against three outstanding teams. I know I can speak for each of my assistants in saying that we are very proud of their efforts and to be their coaches. We are all looking forward to representing Baltimore City C.C. and the metropolitan area in the national championship in Danville, Ill.”

BCCC led by as many as 11 points (69-58) with 4:13 left in regulation, but Cecil refused to be left behind. The Seahawks cut their deficit to two, 76-74, on a jumper by Anthony Moe with 17 seconds left and Moe hit a layup 12 seconds later to the game at 76-all. Warren Wright (Baltimore, Md./Northwestern HS) put up a 3-pointer at the buzzer to go for the win, but missed it, forcing an extra five minutes.

The Panthers took a five-point lead (81-76) in overtime after a layup Sean Farr (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar HS) with 2:21 left in the game. But Cecil got within one, 81-80, after baskets by Donn Hill and Khaalis Coppock-Bey.

After West's free throws, Cecil inbounded the ball and Charles Burley heaved up a shot from beyond half court, but missed, giving the Panthers a win that eluded them in the last two Region XX championship games (2010 and 2011) against Cecil.

The first half and most of the second half were close. BCCC led for the last 16 minutes of the first half and took a 37-35 lead into halftime. Cecil started the second half on an 8-0 run to go up 43-37 with 17:44 left in the second half. But the Panthers regained the lead on a big dunk by Carlos Smith (Baltimore, Md./Forest Park HS) at the 15:46 mark. They managed to stay ahead of the Seahawks until Moe tied the game with five seconds left in regulation.

Coppock-Bey had 20 points and seven rebounds for Cecil. Moe and Hill each had 14 points and Burley added 13. Moe grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds and had one block.

Farr, who was named tournament MVP, led BCCC in scoring for the third straight game with 21 points. He added five rebounds, four assists, and one steal. West finished with 20 points and six boards and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Smith added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Donte Stuckey (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook HS) scored 12 points. Zafir Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Vaux HS) just missed a double-double with 10 assists and nine points.
