BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore guard
Kendal Williams (Dover, Del./Dover HS) scored a game-high 27 points and teammate
Akeem Echols (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood HS) contributed 23 points off the bench to help the Baltimore City Community College men's basketball team to a 93-73 over CCBC-Catonsville on Saturday afternoon at the BCCC P.E. Center.
Prior to the start of the game, Williams, Echols and four other sophomores were honored in the Sophomore Day activities.
Catonsville (9-12, 6-8 MD JUCO) jumped out to a fast 8-6 lead, but BCCC (17-8, 13-1 MD JUCO) tied it at 8-all on a layup by
Aaron Parham (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar HS) with 15:08 left in the first half. There were four more ties over the next 13 minutes and the Panthers took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Williams with 2:01 left in the first half.
A jumper by Williams with five seconds left gave BCCC a 45-37 lead at the break.
The Cardinals scored four unanswered points to start the second half, but the Panthers went on a 23-10 run to take a 67-51 lead after a pair of free throws by
Xavier Richards (St. Thomas, U.S.V.I./Gwynn Park HS) with 10:38 left in the game. BCCC maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the game and sealed the win on three consecutive baskets by Echols.
Charles Woods led Catonsville with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Kenneth White-Nash finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while Quinton Jackson 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Williams was 11-of-16 from the floor for the game, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range and added five rebounds and two assists. Echols came off the bench and hit 10 of his 11 shot attempts from the floor and was 3-of-5 from the free-throw line.
The other Sophomore Day honorees were
Sean Farr (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar HS),
Justin Kuntz (Baltimore, Md./Glen Burnie HS),
Will Adams (Philadelphia, Pa./Towson University) and
Mike Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa./Monroe College)
Farr had 17 points and seven rebounds, Kuntz had nine points and eight board and Adams finished with nine and six assists. Wilson passed out five assists.
The Panthers travel to Hagerstown, Md. on Wednesday to take on Hagerstown CC at 8 p.m.
