HAGERSTOWN, Md. –
Sean Farr (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar HS) hit a layup with two seconds left in overtime to break a 79-all tie and Christian Leach missed a desperation 3-pointer on the other end to give the Baltimore City Community College men's basketball team a 81-79 win over Hagerstown Community College on Wednesday night. The win secured the first regular-season Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO) title of head coach
Terry Maczko's seven-year tenure.
BCCC (18-8, 14-1 MD JUCO) will host the MD JUCO Tournament first-round game on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Hagerstown (22-3, 13-2) led 69-67 with 2:36 left in regulation, but Farr made a layup to even things out at 69-all with 50 seconds left. A steal by
Justin Kuntz (Baltimore, Md./Glen Burnie HS) at the 29-second mark gave the Panthers the ball back, but a missed jumper by
Kendal Williams (Dover, Del./Dover HS) at the buzzer forced the extra period.
The Hawks scored the first three points in overtime on free throws by Antonio Jenifer and Leach to take a 72-69 lead with 4:01 left in the game. But a layup by Williams 21 seconds later kept BCCC in the game.
A pair of free throws by
Will Adams (Philadelphia, Pa./Towson University) at the 2:46 mark put the Panthers up 75-74 and a Kuntz layup 43 seconds later put BCCC up by three, 77-74. Donte Thomas scored five straight points for the Hawks to knot things at 79-all before Farr's game-winner.
The Panthers started the game on a 12-0 run that was capped by a jumper by Williams 15:53 left in the first half. But the Hawks came roaring back and got within one, 36-35, at halftime. It was much of the same in the second half with neither team leading by more than eight points.
Kervin Rameau led Hagerstown with game-highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds. Thomas finished with 21 points, while Jenifer had 13 points and 10 boards. Leach tallied 10 points and five rebounds.
Farr, Kuntz and
Xavier Richards (St. Thomas, U.S.V.I./Gwynn Park HS) each had 13 points for the Panthers. Adams and
Mike Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa./Monroe College) both had 12 points. Kuntz had a team-high seven rebounds, while Williams dished out a game-high six assists.
