NEW ROCHELLE, NY. – The Baltimore City Community College men's basketball team went 1-1 over the weekend in the Monroe Tip-Off Classic. BCCC is 2-1 to start off the season. On Friday night, BCCC defeated the hosting team Monroe College 69-68 in double overtime.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 7-3 lead at the 15:01 mark and go on to lead by as many as six, (16-10) nearly midway in the opening half. The Mustangs went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 16 apiece with 8:43 left to go in the first half.
There were four lead changes over the next 3:30 of play, with the Mustangs taking the last lead of the half by two, (24-22) on a three-pointer by Jaylen Benton with 5:07 remaining.
The Panthers went into the half trailing 29-33.
In the second half, the Panthers trailed by as many as eight, (41-33) with 17:12 to go in the game. Trailing for the entire half the Panthers kept clawing away at the Mustangs giving them a chance to win or send the game into overtime as they were down 54-56 with :2 seconds remaining on the clock.
Freshman
Tre' Thomas (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) hit a jumper as time expired to send the game to overtime.
In the first OT, it was the Mustangs who tied the game at 61 all with 1:20 left as Will Tavares made 1-of-2 free-throws.
In the second OT, sophomore
Terry Harris (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood HS) had a tip-in that gave the Panthers the lead and sealed the victory with :50 seconds left in the extra session.
The Mustangs had three players to score in double figures; Tavares had a team-high 13 points. Thomas Rivera added 12 and Benton finished with 10.
For BCCC, Harris posted a double-double with game-highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds, while adding three blocks and two steals. Thomas scored 17 points for the night.
DaJuan Dent (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills HS) finished with six points and grabbed seven boards and
Deion Evans (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep HS) contributed with four points and six rebounds.
Chas Brown (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic HS) ended with nine points shooting 9-of-12 from the charity stripe.
The Panthers will host their first home game of the season in the P.E. Center on Wednesday, November 12
th against Prince George's Community College at 7:30 p.m.
General admissions will be $5, $2 for BCPS and free admission for all BCCC faculty, staff and students with valid I.D.
