Richards and Pyatt help Panthers to a win on Sophomore Night 82-74

BALTIMORE, MD. – The Baltimore City Community College men's basketball team defeated Garrett College 82-74 on Tuesday night in the P.E. Center.
 
BCCC bounced back from a tough loss to get back in the race for the top seed in the MD JUCO with their record at 9-4.
 
The Panthers jumped out to a 19-4 lead with 13:53 to go in the opening half. Each time the Lakers made a run the Panthers put runs of their own together to close out the first half with a 41-36 lead.
 
In the second half Garrett (14-7), cut the lead to one early behind the scoring of Corey Groom. Groom scored the first 12 points for the Lakers.
 
BCCC kept Garrett at bay with key free-throws (10-11) down the stretch to get back on the winning track.
 
The Lakers were led in scoring by Frank Holloway with a game-high 28 points and Groom ended with 20 points.
 
For the Panthers, Xavier Richards (St. Thomas, U.S.V.I./Gwynn Park HS) finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Fellow sophomore Kavon Pyatt (Baltimore, Md./Edmondson HS) put in 12 points, five boards and three assists.
 
Brian Kelley (Lanham, Md./Atlantic Shores HS) matched his season-high of 17 points.
 
The Panthers will host the Community College of Philadelphia on Thursday, February 6th for the last home game of the regular season.
 
General admission is $5.00, $2.00 for BCPS and free admissions for faculty, staff and students with a valid school I.D.
