Panthers Survive in Waning Seconds against Pioneers 76-74

SEVERN, MD.John Majors (Upper Marlboro, Md./Largo HS) of the Baltimore City Community College men's basketball team scored a career-high 31 points as BCCC survived in the last seconds against Anne Arundel Community College on Saturday afternoon 76-74.
 
With the score tied at 74-74 with 0:07 seconds left in the game, sophomore forward John Majors (Upper Marlboro, Md./Largo HS), blocked an attempted lay-up by Ann Arundel's guard Ryan Hawkins. T
 
The Panthers were off to the races going the length of the floor capped off by an emphatic dunk by freshmen forward Deion Evans (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep HS). The Pioneers last ditched effort came with a missed three-quarters quart heave by Chakhan Smith.
 
The Panthers trailed by as many as 13 in the second half and were down nine points with a little under 3:00 remaining.
 
The Panthers clawed back with their signature pressure defense forcing turnover after turnover cutting the deficit to one (70-69) with 1:58 on a Keon Press (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City HS) three-pointer. During that stretch, Press hit two big trey's to spark the teams dramatic comeback.
 
BCCC took a brief 72-70 lead on an old-fashion three point conversion by Majors. After Press and AACC Caleb Smith both made a pair of free-throws, the score was 74 apiece setting up the thrilling finish in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
 
For the Pioneers, Caleb Smith scored a team-high 23 points. Daquan Walcott and Chakhan Smith both scored 11 points and Ryan Hawkins finished the game with 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
 
For BCCC, Majors recorded his second double-double as in many games with 10 rebounds.
 
Press ended the game with 13 points off the bench and Brian Kelley (Lanham, Md./Atlantic Shores) had a game-high 12 assists alongside seven points and three steals.
 
The Panthers will host Chesapeake College on Tuesday February, 3rd at the P.E. Center at 7:30 p.m.
 
General admissions for the tournament will be $5.00, for BCPS $2.00 and free admissions for faculty and students with a valid college I.D.
