Thomas Gives BCCC a 73-71 win over Harford with Game-Winning Jumper

BALTIMORE, MD. – The Baltimore City Community College men's basketball team defeated fellow Division I foe Harford Community College 73-71 on a game-winning jumper by sophomore Tre' Thomas (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) on Wednesday night in the P.E. Center.
 
BCCC stays at the top of the conference in a tie for first place, overall the win takes BCCC to 14-4 while they are 6-1 in conference play.
 
To the game it was a back and forth affair with both teams trying to impose their will on the other in front of a very enthused crowd. The game was tied at 14 with 12:03 on a three-pointer by Evason Ogbonna for the Fighting Owls.
 
The Panthers would use a 13-6 run to take a 27-20 lead over the Fighting Owls. The Panthers stretched their lead to the largest of the game at 11 with just under 2:00 left in the half and would eventually go into halftime with a 39-30 lead.
 
It was the freshmen guards Haneef Vaughn-Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa./Constitution HS), Mekhi Bryant (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury HS) and Fredrell Jenkins (New Orleans, La./JS Clark) along with freshman forward Chad Andrews-Fulton (Philadelphia, Pa./Constitution HS) who steady the first half for the Panthers.
 
Andrews-Fulton, Bryant and Vaughn-Wilson scored 11, eight and six points respectively and Jenkins was active on the boards with seven to lead everyone in the first 20:00 of play.
 
In the second half Jenkins exploded and caught on fire when the team needed to be sparked scoring 16 points.
 
Harford used an 8-0 run to take a one point lead (50-49) with 13:59 left in the game. The game went back and forth just as it did in the first half, but this time Harford were the recipients of a five point lead (61-56), late in the second half.
 
Jenkins scored the next eight points for the Panthers including a big three-pointer to tie the game up at 61 with 5:45 remaining in the game and another one to give them a 64-61 lead.
 
With 0:29 left in the game, the Fighting Owls tied the game up on a three-pointer by Aaron McDonald. The Panthers had the ball with the last position and with the ball in their sophomore guard's Thomas hands and made a move to get to his spot on the left elbow and knocked down the game-winning shot.
 
Harford had three players in double figures, Cedric Hines, Aaron McDonald and Davonte Williams who all scored 14 points apiece. Jalen Thompson had a team-high 12 rebounds and Williams ended with 11.
 
For BCCC, Jenkins led all scorers and rebounders with 18 and 13 for his first career double-double. Vaughn-Wilson ended with 15 points and four assists and Bryant finished the game with 14 points and six rebounds.       
 
The Panthers will end their three-game home stand in the P.E. Center on Saturday, January 16th when they host Howard Community College at 3 p.m.
 
General admission will be $5, $2 for BCPS and free admission for BCCC faculty, staff and students with valid I.D.
