Panthers survive Trojans attack 87-86; Win 5th in a row

BALTIMORE, MD -- Baltimore City Community College had watched its 12-point lead nearly vanish with only two seconds left to play against the visiting Trojans of Allegany College.

Desmond Rene was at the line with the Panthers leading by one. He intentionally missed the free throw, but as the shot didn't touch the rim he was called for a violation.

One last shot, one last chance for Allegany.

The full court heave fell short, and the celebration for the BCCC Panthers was on.

The Panthers, 18-6 (11-1 MD JUCO), defeated Allegany 87-86 on sophomore day for BCCC making it their fifth win in a row. "It was a big game and a big win on sophomore day," said Panthers Head coach Terry Maczko. "We had a couple opportunities to put them away. But, to their credit, Allegany kept hanging around. In the end we were able to get the victory and the win over Allegany makes us the #1 seed in our region [region 20] of the NJCAA tournament. In addition, we are guaranteed at least a share of the conference regular season championship. As a team, I think we are beginning to understand that one of our biggest strengths is our depth. If we support and trust each other as we move towards the postseason, we can make another run towards Hutch [the National NJCAA Tournament].

The Panthers balanced offensive attack was led by Randy Rickards with 17 points and 8 rebounds as six players scored in double figures. Kobby Ayetey had 15 points, Ahmin Williams had 12, Mohamed Camara and Joe Adedayo each scored 11, and Desmond Rene was the final Panther to score in double figures with 10 points.
