Kobby Ayetey is on a mission. From Ghana to Maryland, North Carolina and now back to Maryland. He is a young man with a plan. Kobby came to Baltimore City Community College from Accra, Ghana by way of Capital Christian High-School in Largo, Maryland. The basketball coach at BCCC saw a student who could make an impact on the floor and one who also knew his way in the classroom. He was named Captain by his second season at BCCC while leading the team in scoring and back to back Maryland Junior College Conference Championships.
After completing his degree in General Studies at BCCC, Kobby transferred to North Carolina Central University, where his plans were interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. His first season on the basketball court at NCCU may have been cut short by the pandemic, but it didn't keep him from making progress towards his academic goals. He used that time to his advantage. Kobby completed his Bachelor's degree in Behavioral and Social Sciences at NCCU and transferred to Bowie State University to begin graduate school and to once again make a difference on the court. Normally a student athlete who competes two seasons at a junior college would have used up their total of four seasons allowed after two years at a four-year college. The NCAA gave student athletes like Kobby another season of competition because of the time lost to the pandemic.
Kobby is now pursuing a degree in Organizational Communications. After completing his Master's Degree, Kobby plans to continue playing the sport he loves at the professional level. When asked about his journey from Ghana, Kobby says "it's been interesting and fun. I have met a lot of great people". He mentioned that he has good memories about his time at BCCC. In particular he appreciated "the care and attention he received from staff". He loved the small community feel here at BCCC that according to him "gave him a sense that everyone knew him". His advice to future Panther student athletes is "listen and do your job". He knows from personal experience, that listening and being willing to do the work can make any journey a successful one, particularly if you have a plan and the determination to see it through like the back to back champion Kobby Ayetey.
