The BCCC Panthers suffered a tough loss tonight against the Monroe College Mustangs, with a final score of 100-72. The Panthers struggled the entire night on offense, recording their second lowest scoring total of the season. The Panthers offensive struggles on the night were due to the defense of Monroe, but an assist should also be attributed to an ongoing problem this season of being short-handed. The Panthers were without Freshman Forward Wendall Tomlin who was ruled out of action with an injury. He normally gives the Panthers an outside threat which opens up driving lanes and scoring opportunities. With the absence of Tomlin, the Panthers bench was called upon and were able to contribute. Freshman Guard Jamal Lee dropped in 10 points, and Freshman Center Albright Obode led the team with a game high 12 rebounds.
For the second consecutive game, Jo-Nathan Kelly led the Panthers in scoring with 19 points, followed by Sophomore Guard Thomas Reed, with 17 points. The team's most consistent scorer this season, Sophomore Guard Carson Smith also contributed to the overall total with 12 points. The story of the game was the defense of Monroe College, which would make the night for the Panthers offensively, a nightmare. They had a height advantage which allowed them to control the boards on both ends of the court. The result was consistent opportunities for them and not enough shots made for the Panthers. In addition, the Mustangs zone defense caused problems for the Panthers as they were forced into multiple turnovers and miscues throughout the game.
The Panthers will play next at CCBC Catonsville in their weekend Mixer this Saturday at 3:00 pm and again Sunday at 1:00 pm.
