Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Darryl Pope Ed.D

Panthers Win Fourth Straight

The Panthers of BCCC won their fourth straight game this afternoon. They defeated the Lakers of Garrett Community College in what can be described as "they pulled out the come-back". The Panthers started the game aggressively. They pressed and made sure the passes between the players of Garrett were spot on, or they would be picked off. The Panthers were able to get off to an early lead in the first 10 minutes of the first half. The Lakers made some adjustments and soon tied the game. Then some nifty ball handling from their point guard made all the difference. He was able to penetrate and convert some acrobatic layups that gave the Lakers a 9 point lead. Coach Montoyo called a time-out and the Panthers came back with timely picks by Sophomore Carlos Green and Freshmen Ifanieye Lewis that lead to 8 straight points and once again the game was tied. The Lakers were able to convert a last second 3-pointer to end the half and take the lead into the second half.

The second half begin slowly for the Panthers. They missed some contested layups and quickly were faced with a 10 point deficit. The Panthers couldn't seem to cut into the lead as jump shots were not falling. They were down by 9 with 5 minutes left on the clock. The Panthers kept fighting and were able to turn things around with defense. Ifanieye Lewis got things started with a pick that led to Carlos Green being fouled on a converted layup. The next minute saw the Panthers hustling and disrupting the offense of the Lakers to the point where they took the lead after a putback from Freshmen Joshua Bryant. With a minute and half on the clock the Panthers came back and were up by 7 points after a monster jam by Freshmen Blake Neverdon, who joined Carlos Green in double figures.

And then the Panthers had to demonstrate why basketball is a much a mental game as it is a physical contest. The Lakers never gave up. They attacked and made some rainbow 3 pointers and put the game into question. With less than a minute on the clock the game became a 3 point affair with free throws left to decide the outcome. The Panther with the steady free throw stroke was Carlos Green who led all scorers with 27 on the night. His last bucket was enough to seal the deal. The Panthers win. The final score was 82-81.

The next game for the Panthers will be Monday December 4th. They will travel down the road to take on Community College of Baltimore Catonsville. The game starts at 6:00 pm.
