The Athletic Department is pleased to announce three new coaches. Shannell Thompson is the Head Women's Volleyball Coach. Christopher Lewis is the Head Women's Basketball Coach and Montoyo Wooten is the new Men's Head Basketball Coach.
Coach Thompson is a native of Baltimore and comes to BCCC after coaching stints at Harford and Community College of Baltimore County. She has been a part of the local volleyball community for a number of years. Prior to her collegiate coaching career, she was the Program Director for the Starlings Volleyball Club. Coach Thompson remembers attending volleyball games at BCCC before the program was cut in 2016. "I remember those players and how enthusiastic they were to compete. I hope to bring back that energy to BCCC". Dr. Pope says of Coach Thompson, "she is the right person to bring back the sport, because she loves volleyball and Baltimore. Her passion will bring new Panthers to the school and create an environment for Women's Volleyball to thrive."
Coach Lewis comes to BCCC with a great deal of coaching experience. He began his coaching career in 2004 at Missouri Baptist University. His experience includes coaching at the NCAA Division I and II levels including time as the Assistant Coach at George Mason University and as the Recruiting Coordinator for Morgan State University. Coach Lewis has an eye for talent and knows where to find players. He is very familiar with the schools and coaches in the Mid-Atlantic region and should be able to find the right players to reboot the Panthers' Women's Basketball team. The Athletic Director states that "I chose Coach Lewis because we needed someone who had experience and the network necessary to restart the women's program. He knows the territory and has been parts of programs that have experienced turnarounds." Coach Lewis says "I'm looking forward to restarting the Panther program. I have done it before, but this time I am surrounded by talent here in Baltimore which is a bonus."
Coach Montoyo Wooten is a veteran Baltimore coach. Having been the Head Coach at Carver and most recently Franklin High-schools, he is in a unique position to recruit and rebuild the Panther's men's program. Dr. Pope tried to hire Coach Wooten three years ago but wasn't able to get him on board. He says "things happen when they are supposed to even in athletics. Coach Wooten knows Baltimore and fortunately for BCCC athletics, the Baltimore basketball community knows coach Wooten. I know he will be a good steward of the legacy this program has maintained." Coach Wooten is a retired Marine and knows what it takes to build a team. He says "I was trained to be a leader and I know how to pass that knowledge onto young men through sports. I am looking forward to the challenge."
