This season, Tony Smith will mark his 24th year as a basketball coach, the past seven as an assistant to Coach Terry Maczko with the Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) men’s basketball. Coach Smith began his coaching career at the University of Buffalo where he was a two year starter and captain. He was an all conference player for Dundalk Community College and was named DCC’s Most Outstanding Student Athlete in1978.

Coach Smith met Coach Maczko while playing in the Lockheed Martin Basketball League in 1987 and have been professional colleagues and friends ever since. When Coach Maczko became the head coach at Essex Community College, Coach Smith joined him as an assistant and has continued that relationship throughout the past 15 years.

During Coach Smith’s five year tenure with the Maryland Elite AAU program, his teams won over 60% of their games. He qualified for the AAU national tournament each year and won over 15 local and regional tournaments during that time. Three of his players were recruited to play at the Division 1 level and several others have been recruited to play at the Division 2, 3 and Juco levels.

Coach Smith was a political science major at the State University of New York at Buffalo and for the past 25 years has worked for the Lockheed Martin Corporation. In 1989, he was a Martin Marietta Evening of Stars honoree, recognized for Outstanding Supervisory Performance. In 1992 he was an inaugural member of the Martin Marietta Leadership Development Program for high potential employees and currently is the Senior Manager for the Master Planning organization of the Lockheed Martin Integrated Defense Technologies Company.

Assistant Coach Tony Smith and his wife Marzelle are residents of Abingdon, Maryland. They have two children, Noelle and Wyatt; and a loving pet pit bull named Yayo.
