MCHENRY, Md. – Raizel Benn had game-highs of 20 points and 22 rebounds to lead the Garrett College women's basketball team to a 64-43 win over Baltimore City Community College on Monday afternoon at the GC Gymnasium.
With the win, Garrett improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the Maryland JUCO conference, while BCCC fell to 0-7, 0-1.
Tierra McCormick (Washington, D.C./Calvin Coolidge HS) hit a jumper 12:15 left in the first half to put the Lady Panthers up 8-7. But Jalesa Johnson connected on the first of a pair of free throws to things up at 8-all.
Lachell Haynes (New York, N.Y./New Town HS) answered on the other end with a layup with 11:03 left in the opening period to give BCCC a 10-8 lead. The lead would be short-lived as Benn hit one of two free throws and then banked a layup at the 8:33 mark. The Lady Lakers then went on a 13-7 run to take a 24-17 lead into the break.
The Lady Lakers opened up a 12-point lead to start the second half, but the Lady Panthers rallied and got within three, 33-30, after a layup by McCormick with 12:50 left in the game. The Garrett defense stiffened limiting BCCC to just 13 points for the remainder of the game. McCormick scored 10 of the Lady Panthers' points in that stretch.
Fore Garrett, Alice Abiya finished with 18 points, four rebounds and four steals in 19 minutes in the second half. Johnson tallied 10 points and nine rebounds.
McCormick had 14 points, three assists and two steals. Daryl Faulkner (Baltimore, Md./Edmonson-Westside HS) had 10 points and six of BCCC's nine steals.
BCCC is off until December 1 when Chesapeake College comes to the BCCC P.E. Center for a Maryland JUCO conference game. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
