BALTIMORE, Md. – The Baltimore City Community College women's basketball team played what can be considered its best game of the season, but still came up short as the Lady Panthers fell 53-45 to Northern Virginia Community College on Sunday in the 2010 Charm City Classic at the BCCC P. E. Center.
The game was close from beginning to end, with no team leading by more than 10 points. BCCC took a one-point lead (16-15) after a pair of free throws by Lachell Haynes (New York, N.Y.) with 5:32 left in the first half. But a layup by Lauren Amonet 20 seconds later put NOVA (3-9) up by one and the Lady Raiders took a 26-22 lead into halftime.
BCCC (0-13) hung around the entire second half and got within three, 42-39, after a jumper by Sarah Hunt-FoFana (Bronx, N.Y.) with 7:33 left in the game. But the Lady Raiders turned up the defense and held off the Lady Panthers.
NOVA shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the floor for the game, while BCCC hit 16 of its 66 shot attempts (24.2 percent). The Lady Raiders won the rebounding battle 54-44, but the Lady Panthers forced 28 turnovers while committing 22.
April Neal led NOVA with 15 points and added 12 rebounds. Kimberly Walton just missed a double-double with nine points and 17 rebounds. Amonet and Kimberly Andreassen both contributed 10 points.
Hunt-Fofana led BCCC with a career-high 21 points. Daryl Faulkner (Baltimore, Md./Edmonson-Westside HS) had six points, two boards and a game-high seven steals.
