BALTIMORE, Md. – Back-to-back shots by Yolanda Pinkcett and a pair of free throws by Kishia Jackson sealed a 61-56 overtime win for the Hagerstown Community College women's basketball team over Baltimore City Community College on Saturday night at the BCCC P.E. Center.
The Lady Panthers, who are still in search of their first win of the season, seemed to have the game under control late in the second half. Up by 10, 46-36, Nikita Brady (Baltimore, Md.) drilled a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 13 with 5:36 left in regulation.
But Hagerstown (7-1, 2-1 MDJUCO) slowly chipped away at the lead and tied it at 51-all after a jumper by Alessandra Flores at the 1:10 mark. Neither team could score another basket before time expired, forcing overtime.
BCCC (0-9, 0-3 MDJUCO) jumped out to a quick five-point lead, 56-51, after three free throws by Sarah Hunt-Fofana (Bronx, N.Y./J.F.K. HS) and a bucket by Shamera O'Neal (Baltimore, Md./Coppin Academy). But the Lady Hawks stayed focused and capitalized off of some costly Lady Panther mistakes to get the win.
The game was close from the beginning with no team leading by more than six in the first half. BCCC took a two-point lead, 29-27, into halftime.
Overall, the game was statistically similar. Hagerstown shot 30 percent (21-of-70) from the floor for the game, 21.1 percent from 3-point range (4-of-19), went 15-of-29 from the free throw line and grabbed 47 rebounds. BCCC was 22-of-62 (35.5 percent) from the floor, including 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) from beyond the arc. The Lady Panthers shot 52.6 percent (10-for-19) from the charity stripe and had 56 rebounds.
Hagerstown had three players in double figures. Flores had game-highs of 20 points and 39 minutes. She added five assists, three steals, three rebounds and one block. Pinkcett had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds and Jackson contributed 10 points.
For the Lady Panthers, Jamia Lawson (Baltimore, Md./Coppin Academy) and Hunt-Fofana each had 14 points and eight boards. O'Neal had a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Brady finished with three points, six rebounds and three assists.
BCCC hosts Central Penn College at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the P.E. Center.
