BALTIMORE, Md. – Freshman center Jamia Lawson (Baltimore, Md./Coppin Academy) posted a double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds (both game-highs) to lead the Baltimore City Community College women's basketball team to their first win of the season, a 60-36 victory over Central Penn College at the BCCC P.E. Center on Wednesday night. The win was also the first of second-year head coach Cheniece Arthur's career.
The Lady Panthers (1-9) dominated the game from the start. They began the game on a 17-0 run, keeping Central Penn (4-5) off the board until a layup by Marissa Monteiro with 11:18 left in the first half. BCCC outscored Central Penn 21-14 for the remainder of the period to take a 38-16 lead into halftime.
BCCC kept its momentum in the second half and would not let Central Penn get any closer than 18 (44-26). An uncontested jumper by Nikita Brady (Baltimore, Md.) with five seconds left put the exclamation mark on the Lady Panthers first win.
Post play and solid defense won the game for BCCC. The Lady Panthers scored 42 of their 60 points in the paint, forced a season-high 43 Central Penn turnovers and tallied a season-high 21 steals.
For Central Penn, Jasmine Robinson led the way with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Lawson also led all players with two blocks and played a team-high 31 minutes. Sarah Hunt-Fofana (Bronx, N.Y./J.F.K. HS) also scored in double figures with 11 points and added a game-high five steals. Eight other Lady Panthers of the 13 that dressed for the game, scored at least two points.
BCCC hosts the 2011 Charm City Basketball Classic this Friday to Sunday. The tournament will feature six women's basketball teams, including the Lady Panthers.
The Lady Panthers play Globe Institute at 8 p.m. on Friday, Potomac State at 8 p.m. on Saturday, and Tidewater CC at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Admission for the Charm City Classic is $5 per day. BCCC students, faculty and staff will be admitted for free with a valid ID.
