BALTIMORE, Md. – Destinee Jernigan scored a team-high 18 points to lead the Frederick Community College women's basketball team to an 80-70 win over Baltimore City Community College on Tuesday night at the BCCC P.E. Center. All five Frederick starters scored in double figures.
BCCC (7-16, 4-7 MD JUCO) started out well in the first half and led for almost 18 minutes. A pair of free throws by Sarah Hunt-Fofana (Bronx, N.Y./JFK HS) with 9:20 left in the first half gave the Lady Panthers their largest lead of the period, nine points (24-15).
But the Lady Cougars (14-7, 6-3 MD JUCO) went on a 15-5 run over the next seven minutes to take a 30-29 lead. Keyontay Dunaway (Baltimore, Md./Carver HS) hit a jumper at the 1:06 mark to regain the lead for BCCC and after exchanging baskets during the final minute of the half, the Lady Panthers went into halftime with a 34-33 lead.
Frederick struck first in the second half with a jumper by Shakena Williams with 19:27 left in the game. The Lady Cougars scored 10 unanswered points in 2:44 of the second half. BCCC finally scored on the second of two free throws by TaShay Smith (Baltimore, Md./Overlea HS) at the 16:14 mark to bring the score to 44-35.
The closest BCCC could get the rest of the way was three points, 53-50, after a jumper by Hunt-Fofana with 10:58 left. Frederick led by as many as 14 points (73-59) down the stretch.
The Lady Panthers went on a 21-7 run over the last 3:12 of the game to get within 10, but could not close the gap any further.
Kia Duncan played all 40 minutes and finished with 16 points, six rebounds and 6 assists for Frederick. Williams had 13 points and a game-high 19 rebounds, while Jasmine Walker and Jourdan Stanhope had 12 and 10 points, respectively. Stanhope had five of Frederick's 10 blocks.
For BCCC, Smith had a game- and career-high 20 points. Hunt-Fofana added 18 points, six assists and four steals. She was 10-of-13 from the free-throw line.
Jamia Lawson (Baltimore, Md./Coppin Academy) had eight points and 10 rebounds, while Nikita Brady (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern HS) had nine points and nine boards.
The Lady Panthers step outside of conference play on Thursday for a matchup against Roxbury Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the BCCC P.E. Center.
