ROCKVILLE, Md. – Desha Nourn had game-highs of 29 points and seven made 3-pointers to help the Montgomery College women's basketball team breeze past Baltimore City Community College 81-55 Saturday evening in the Montgomery Classic. Nourn was 8-of-12 from the field for the game, and a remarkable 7-of-8 from behind the arc. She also went 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
Montgomery (1-0) started off the game on a 10-2 run, but BCCC (0-1) quickly took the lead by putting together a 9-0 run that was capped by a pair of free throws by sophomore
Tashay Smith (Baltimore, Md./Overlea HS) with 10:12 left in the first half.
The game took a turn for the worse for BCCC at the 7:19 mark of the first half as Nourn started to heat up draining back to back shots from long range. The BCCC tandem of Smith and freshman
Iman Scott (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown HS) kept the Lady Panthers in the game, however, scoring 20 of the team's 29 points. Nourn ended up going 4-of-5 from 3-point range to finish the half, giving the Lady Raptors a 37-29 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Raptors seemed to be too much for BCCC outscoring the Lady Panthers 44-26. A combination of second chance opportunities and hot shooting from behind the arc negated a push for BCCC to make a comeback.
Meghan Tilghman also scored in double figures of Montgomery College with 21 points. Kapria Redparth and Jartu Toweh grabbed nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
Scott posted her first career double-double as a Lady Panther dropping 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, which were both team-highs. Smith finished with 10 points. Freshman
Tiara France (Petersburg, Va./Petersburg HS) came off the bench contributing seven points and
Cindy Kolade (Ivory Coast/Western) chipped in with six points and six boards.
The Lady Panthers will be back at it again on Sunday to take on Cecil College at 1 p.m. in Rockville, Md. for the conclusion of the Montgomery Classic.
