ROCKVILLE, Md. – Briana Thomas had a game-high 33 points to lead the Cecil College women's basketball team to a 91-49 rout of Baltimore City Community College on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Montgomery College Classic. Thomas went 12-of-16 from the field, including 8-of-9 from 3-point range to give Cecil its first win of the season.
Cecil (1-1) jumped out to a 12-0 lead to start the game. BCCC (0-2) did not get on the board until sophomore
Tashay Smith (Baltimore, Md./Overlea HS) hit a jumper with 16 minutes left in the first half. She went on to score the Lady Panthers' next six points.
Cecil held a six-point lead (16-10) with 12 minutes left in the first half, but the Lady Panthers would get no closer for the remainder of the game. Cecil went on a 23-9 run to finish the first half and took a 39-19 lead into the break.
In the second half, Thomas was a perfect 6-for-6 from 3-point range and scored 22 of her 33 points in the final period. BCCC was more productive offensively in the second half, but could not overcome the large first-half deficit.
For Cecil, Christina Talbert also scored in double figures with 24 points and added five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Jasmine Moore scored 12 points off the bench, while center Jayde Duncan grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds to go with her seven points and four blocks. Desiree Foye had 10 rebounds and seven points.
Smith finished with 14 points and six rebounds and recorded double-digit points for the second consecutive game. Freshman
Aquira Nixon (Baltimore, Md./Northwestern HS) tallied 12 points and nine rebounds, while
Iman Scott (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown HS) had eight points and seven rebounds.
The Lady Panthers head to the P.E. Center for their home opener on Wednesday at 8 p.m. when they host CCBC-Dundalk.
