BALTIMORE, Md. – Jillian Gordon connected on a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left in the game then hit a layup with eight seconds left to give the Globe Institute of Technology women's basketball team a 52-48 win over Baltimore City Community College on Sunday afternoon in the 2012 BCCC Charm City Classic. Both teams finished the weekend with a 1-2 record.
Missed free throws down the stretch hurt BCCC (2-10). The Lady Panthers went 0-for-4 from the charity stripe in the final 34 seconds of the game. They shot a paltry 4-of-16 (25 percent) from the line for the entire game.
The game got off to a very slow start and was a low-scoring affair for much of the first half. BCCC led 17-11 after two free throws by
Sheborah Miller (Baltimore, Md./Coppin Academy) with 8:03 left in the first half. Globe (3-2) tied the game at 19-all on a jumper by Shaquella Figuroa at the 2:13 mark.
Miller hit a three-pointer seven seconds later and a layup by
Tiara France (Petersburg, Va./Petersburg HS) with 44 seconds left gave BCCC a 24-21 lead going into halftime.
Iman Scott (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown HS) knocked down a trey to start the second half, putting the Lady Panthers up 27-21. They led by as many as 10, 48-38, after a jumper by
Cindy Kolade (Ivory Coast/Western) with 5:59 left in the game. But the Lady Knights put turned up the pressure and outscored the Lady Panthers 14-0 the rest of the way.
Gordon led Globe with 20 points and nine rebounds. Careece Moore had 18 points and five rebounds while Figuroa had nine boards and eight points.
For BCCC, Scott tallied her ninth double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high 22 rebounds. Kolade also had a career night after grabbing a personal-best 14 rebounds. Miller finished with 12 points and four boards, and France had 10 points and four rebounds.
Tashay Smith (Baltimore, Md./Overlea HS) recorded six points and nine boards.
The Lady Panthers return to conference play on Wednesday when they host the College of Southern Maryland at 6 p.m.
