BALTIMORE, Md. – The Baltimore City Community College women's basketball team defeated the Community College of Philadelphia 62-35 on Friday evening at the P.E. Center. This was the first season opener win for the Lady Panthers in the past three years.
The Lady Panthers used 34 points off of turnovers, 34 bench points and 12 second chance points to give head coach
Tara A. Owens, her first victory in the NJCAA in her first game as a junior college head coach.
The Lady Colonials, Amber Thorpe, scored the first two points of the game and took a 4-2 lead with 18:38 in the first half. During the next two minutes, both teams were plagued by fouls, missed open shots or turnovers.

She'cquan Bailey (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill High School) at the 16:27 mark started a 14-2 run, as BCCC took a nine point lead (16-7). The Community College of Philadelphia used a 6-0 run cutting the lead to three (16-13), with a layup by Sarai Nathaniel with 10:26 remaining in the opening half. BCCC went scoreless for nearly five minutes during the run.
The Lady Panthers lead by as many as 13 (26-13), going on a 10-0 run before heading into the break with a 29-18 lead.
The second half opened the same as the first half did with Thorpe scoring the first bucket. As the defensive intensity increased,
Shamera O'Neal (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern HS),
Aneja Kemp (Norfolk, Va./Maury HS) and
Tache Smothers (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim HS) harassed the ball handlers early and often.
The lead ballooned to 18 (52-34), as Lashana James made one of two free-throws for the last point of the game for the Lady Colonials with 4:12 left to go in the game. BCCC finished the game on a 10-0 run (62-35), and captured the win.
For the Lady Colonials, Nathaniel had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds adding six assists and six steals. Thorpe also had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
For BCCC, Bailey finished with a game-high 15 points, going 3-of-4 from behind the arc to go along with seven rebounds.
Nikita Brady (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern HS) came off the bench with 10 points and five boards.
Crashing the boards for the Lady Panthers,
Iman Scott (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) had a game-high 13 rebounds and O'Neal grabbed six boards.
Cierra Tourville (Manhattan, N.Y./Joppatowne HS) and
Asia Brittingham (Baltimore, Md./Friendship Academy) both recorded five rebounds.
The Lady Panthers will host the Baltimore City Legends Classic next weekend where their next opponent will be the pre-season #21 ranked team in the nation, ASA on Saturday at 4 p.m.
