Tiara France (Petersburg, Va./Petersburg HS) added 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists to lead the No. 7 Baltimore City Community College women's basketball team to a 78-50 win over No. 10 Prince George's Community College in the opening round of the 2013 Maryland JUCO Conference Tournament on Tuesday night.
The win was the first tournament victory in the three-year tenure of head coach
Cheniece Arthur. The Lady Panthers (11-15) advance to Thursday's quarterfinal round for a 12 p.m. game against No. 2 Chesapeake College (17-1). In the previous meeting between the two teams this season, Chesapeake came away with a 71-56 win on January 9.
BCCC got off to a fast start and led 25-8 after a layup by Scott with 8:28 left in the first half. Both teams scored 13 points for the remainder of the half, and the Lady Panthers took a 38-21 lead into halftime.
The second half was much of the same as BCCC led by as many as 30 points, 73-43, after a pair of free throws by France with 3:40 left in the game.
Tiara Smith led Prince George's with 22 points and added six rebounds, four steals and two assists. Sabrina Cue had 10 points, nine boards and two blocks, while Joelle Hill six points and nine rebounds.
Tashay Smith (Baltimore, Md./Overlea HS) also scored in double figures for the Lady Panthers with 17 points.
Cindy Kolade (Ivory Coast/Western HS) had 13 rebounds to go with her seven points.
