BEL AIR, Md. – The Chesapeake College women's basketball team, the No. 2 seed in the 2013 Maryland JUCO Tournament, defeated No. 7 Baltimore City Community College 70-47 in the quarterfinal round on Thursday afternoon at the APG Federal Credit Union Arena at Harford Community College.
Chesapeake (18-1) advances to Saturday's semifinal game at 11 a.m. against the winner of the No.3 Montgomery College vs. No. 6 Hagerstown Community College game.
The Skipjacks started out on a 5-0 run, but the Lady Panthers (11-16) tied the game at 5-all after a layup and a 3-pointer by
Iman Scott (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown HS). Things remained close through most of the first half. A layup by
Cindy Kolade (Ivory Coast/Western HS) at the 7:37 mark got BCCC within one, 16-15.
But the Skipjacks went on a 16-5 run to end the first half, taking a 32-20 lead into the break.
Chesapeake turned it up in the second half and led by as many as 30, 60-30, along the way. A jumper by Scott with 36 seconds left in the game ended the scoring and sent Chesapeake to the semifinal round.
Denver Clyde finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for Chesapeake. Dejhonae Cannady had 13 points and six steals, while Brittany Taylor and Sydney Small scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Rose Smith grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
Scott led the Lady Panthers with 16 points and 12 boards.
Tashay Smith (Baltimore, Md./Overlea HS) had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Kolade had 10 points and nine boards.
