Hard Fought Win For The Panthers

Today the BCCC Panthers defeated the Howard Community College Dragons 80-77. In the first half, the Panthers took advantage of the zone defense from Howard, as they started off white-hot from the field, finishing the first half 8-13 from deep. Wendall Tomlin led the way with 12 points; 9 of which came from behind the arc. Even with the fantastic shooting display in the first half, Howard would keep the game tight, even taking a lead into halftime 38-37. Offensive rebounds was the difference, as the Panthers took advantage of second chances. Freshman Albright Obode led the way on the boards with 13 which included 5 offensive rebounds.

The second half was just as competitive, as both teams came out of halftime looking to adjust to the opposition. Albright Obode would hear his name announced throughout the second half, as he continued a monster performance on the boards. Both teams would scrap and claw for every possession, as the lead would swing multiple times throughout the second half. Howard would adjust their game plan and stick to more of a man-to-man approach, against the fast-paced Panthers offense. Tomlin would again lead the team offensively in the second half. He lead all scores with 21 points to go along with 6 rebounds and two assist.

As mentioned, Albright Obode would again be a key contributor down the stretch, securing offensive rebounds on missed field goals, many of which would lead to second chance opportunities for BCCC. The Panthers trailed the Dragons of Howard CC until a basket by Wendall Tomlin tied the game with a little more than 2 minutes left. A forced turnover on the other end led to the go ahead basket by Sophomore Carson Smith who finished the game with 12 points and 5 rebounds- one of which was a crucial sky grabbing defensive rebound that kept Howard from tying the game with seconds remaining on the game clock. The Panthers were then up by 5 with 13 seconds left in the game. Howard cut the Panthers lead to 2 after a well executed 3-pointer out of a timeout. Their late charge would be stopped when Sophomore David Harris sealed the game with 2 free throws. Harris would finish the game with a game high 11 assists, and 15 points. Two other players who contributed to the victory include Sophomore Thomas Reid who scored 13 points and Freshmen Jamal Lee who scored 8 points.

The Panthers are back on the court again this Saturday at 3:00 pm when they take on the CCBC Dundalk Lions in the PE Center.
