The Panthers traveled down route 2 and took on the Riverhawks of Anne Arundel Community College. The Panthers were hoping to get out of a slump after losing the last two games. The team has not been able to find a rhythm on the offensive end of the court. Tonight however was different. The Riverhawks were hot early in the game and were able to get jump shots to fall. They quickly took a double digit lead in the first half and made the Panthers wonder if they were ready to get their first road win since the first week of the season, way back in November. In spite of being down and not connecting on set plays, Coach Prioleau was patient. He didn't panic and the team kept trying to establish a presence with their big man in the middle,
Albright Obode. Although the Panthers started out slowly in the first half, they were able to pick things up and take the lead going into the second half. The Panthers were able to reduce a double digit deficit at the midpoint of the first half, to even the score with 2:41 on the clock. A few good defensive stops later and they took their first lead. The first half ended with the Panthers up 42-41 thanks to
Jo-Nathan Kelly who put up 11 points and
Wendall Tomlin who knocked down a few three's to end up with 8 points.
The second half was a different story because of what appeared to be a different team. The Panthers came out in sync and ready to execute. The quickly established an inside-out offensive strategy and it paid dividends. Within the first 5 minutes of the half, the Panthers were up by 11. They kept putting pressure on the Riverhawks by either attacking off of the dribble on pounding the ball inside with
Albright Obode who finished with a double-double that reads on the stat sheet as 14 points,11 rebounds to go along with two steals and two blocks or what the Panthers are hoping will be an average day for the Freshman from Ireland.
The Panthers bench also contributed to the victory.
Jason Ogbolu and
Thomas Reid both scored in double figures with 14 and 12 respectively.
Andre Stallings-McCargo also made his presence known with 9 points that included a couple of memorable dunks.
The scoring was balanced and the win was secured as the team as a whole played defense with a tenacity the befits the name Panther. The final score was the Panther's largest margin of victory this season 95-70.
The next game for the home team is Saturday February 18 at home in the PE Center, as they take on the Skipjacks of Chesapeake Community College. This will be the final home game of the regular season for the Panthers. The game will also be a celebration of the Sophomores,
Carson Smith and
David Harris. Game time is 3:00 pm.
