Michelle Wright (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar HS) of the Baltimore City Community College women's basketball team, played big down the stretch in the victory against their only Division I opponent in the MDJUCO, Harford Community College 89-81 at the APGFCU Arena. The women's team stays undefeated in conference play and 6-1 overall for the season.
The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 17-5 lead in the raucous arena as they held the Lady Owls (5-3, 0-1 MDJUCO) to 21% shooting in the first half. The stingy defense scored 16 points off of the 17 they forced in the half and had 11 steals while holding a slim advantage on the glass, outrebounding the Lady Owls 26-23.
Offensively, the Lady Panthers shot 41% from the field and 50% from behind the arc with their two leading scorer's on the bench plagued by early foul trouble. Sophomores
Asia Brittingham (Baltimore, Md./Friendship Academy) and
Tache Smothers (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim HS) steadied the ship with seven points and six rebounds and eight points respectively in the first 20:00 of play.
The Lady Panthers held a 34-21 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Lady Panthers led by as many as 25 (60-35) with 11:33. Over the next 8:00, the Lady Owls used a 31-9 run to cut the deficit to three (69-66) with 3:51 remaining in the game. The Lady Panthers regained an eight point lead before the lead diminished to a one point lead with 1:29 to go.
The Lady Panthers finally made clutch free-throws down the stretch to seal the deal. Wright scored 13 of the 21 points for the Lady Panthers during the last 3:51 of the game.
For the Lady Fighting Owls, Zana Godoy scored a team-high 21 points. Ashley Hightower had a double-double with 20 rebounds and 14 points, Mia Fitts had 19 points and Jasalyn Denkins finished with 10 points.
For the Lady Panthers, there were five players who scored in double figures. Wright scored 28 of her 36 points in the second half and grabbed 18 rebounds, as she recorded her sixth double-double of the season.
Amia Howard (Baltimore, Md./Benjamin Franklin HS) ended the game with 14 points, six boards and four blocks in limited play with foul issues.
Jasmine Townes (Newark, N.J./West Side HS) finished with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Brittingham had 10 points and eight boards and Smothers finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Lady Panthers will be hosting the Charm City Classic this Saturday, December 6
th and Sunday, December 7
th at the P.E. Center. The first game will be at 1 p.m. on both days.
The teams participating in this weekend's classic will include Chesapeake College, Harcum College and Monroe Community College.
General admissions for the tournament will be $8, $2 for BCPS and free admissions for BCCC faculty, staff and students with a valid school I.D.
