Box Score BALTIMORE, MD. – The Baltimore City Community College women's basketball team beat the undefeated Hagerstown Community College 68-63 on Saturday afternoon. BCCC took sole possession of first place in the MD JUCO Conference with the win. Their record stands at 17-6 overall and 8-1 in the conference.
The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Lady Hawks (15-5, 7-1) tied the game at 9 apiece at the 14:00 mark.
The game stayed tight as both teams went back and forth fighting to take control of the game. There were four more lead changes in the first half with the last coming with 3:22 left before the half with the score 24 all. The Lady Panthers ended the half on a 7-3 run to take a four point lead and momentum into the break 31-27.
In the second half, there were six ties as the intensity picked up on both sides. The Lady Panthers led by as many as seven points at the 12:52 mark on a pair of free-throws from
Michelle Wright (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar HS).
The Lady Panthers led for the majority of the second half until Zjhane West hit back to back jumpers and a Valerie Poole which capped a 6-0 run for the Lady Hawks to take a 52-50 lead with 8:16 to play.
The Lady Panthers held a 63-60 with 0:40 left to go and after a missed three-point attempt by Daysha Adams, Olivia Turner grabbed an offensive rebound and kicked it back out to Adams and on her second attempt from behind the arc, she was fouled by
Alexis Wade (Raleigh, NC/Southeast Raleigh HS).
Adams would hit all the shots from the charity stripe to tie the game for the last time at 63-63. Wright scored the last five points for the Lady Panthers with three coming on an and-one conversion with 0:29 left and two more free-throws to put the nail in the coffin.
For the Lady Hawks, Turner scored 23 points. West had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Jaz Spruill finished with 10 points.
For the Lady Panthers, Wright posted a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds and also had four blocks in the game.
Asia Brittingham (Baltimore, Md./Friendship Academy) also had a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards and
Danaira Duncan (Baltimore, Md./Coppin Academy) chipped in with a season-high 16 points alongside four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Wade pulled down 10 rebounds in the game.
The Lady Panthers will be on the road against Montgomery College on the Takoma Park campus. The game will take place on Wednesday, January 28
th at 7:30 p.m.
