George “Jerry” Phipps spent 14 years working at the Community College of Baltimore in various capacities. He came to the College in 1968 as a professor and men’s basketball coach, and in 1978,he became the athletic director and while still leading the basketball team.

Phipps had an extremely successful coaching career at CCB and tallied a 360-87 record in 14 seasons. His teams won 12 Maryland JUCO Championships and five Region XX titles and had 12 seasons of 20 or more wins, including four with 30 or more. Phipps, a 12-time MD JUCO Coach of the Year and five-time Region XX Coach of the Year recipient, led the Red Devils to the NJCAA National Tournament on two occasions, finishing eighth and sixth, respectively, in 1978 and 1980.

Phipps has been inducted into several Halls of Fame including the BCCC Athletics Hall of Fame, the NJCAA Region XX Hall of Fame, the Western Maryland College Hall of Fame, the Baltimore City College Hall of Fame, and the Eastern Shore Softball Hall of Fame. Phipps and wife Joanie have two children, Michael and Leslie.
